Experience the charm and nostalgia of the 1950's with our Vintage Primitive Bouncing Pig and Farmer Crank Sculpture! This unique folk art piece features a working crank that makes the farmer appear to walk while his pig bounces up and down. A perfect addition to any collection, and is believed to be by Willard Watson (1921-1995), an African American folk artist from Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He was also know by the nickname, "The Texas Kid". Watson’s ancestry is a blend of African, Choctaw, French, and Cajun, and he used this blend of life experiences to influence his sculptures with simple materials taken from everyday life. The sculpture has a thumb and first finger missing on the left hand, and minor damage to the third finger that is still intact. The left front side of the hat has a small imperfection. The stand has a crack on it; that doesn't appear to have broken off but was repaired/glued at some point. The tail of the pig seems to be unique and intact to this particular sculpture as well as the whip which is missing from other known sculptures (please see photos). The entire sculpture is hand carved from wood with a wire crank, stirrups and whip. The color of the pig (black) also seems unique, as other sculptures have a natural wood colored pig. It's dimensions are: 11 5/8"l x 4"w (by crank) x 6.5"h. This sculpture was found in an attic in Raleigh, North Carolina, and is unmarked.
